Basic model building skills contest

We'd like to announce the first contest of the new QuarterMilers forum. We threw quite a few ideas around for a while and had a few discussions. Our goal was to present a contest that would allow the most members to compete in fairly. The fact is that there is no contest that would satisfy every possible entrant 100%. So what we’re offering is our attempt in getting as many of you as possible interested. With that being said, what we finally came up with is an All Classes, Out of Box+ contest. Here are the description and rules.

The subject matter will need to fit into one of the classes listed in the “Drag Racing In Scale” category. Anything from Street Machines to Pro Stock to Top Fuel and everything in between. As long as there is a board on the forum that the completed build will fit in, it’s fine. Your build may also be either a period correct entry or a current NHRA rules entry.

The completed project must be a basic Out of Box build with the limited additions listed below. This is the area that caused us Admins the most trouble. We know that many of you use very limited third party parts to detail your build and many more of you spare no expense when buying parts to detail with. To attempt to level the playing field, we have decided to limit third party parts to BASIC engine detailing to include heater hoses, distributors, and spark plug wires. Other acceptable parts are wheels & tires and decals. To further level the playing field we ask that you limit all third party parts to a maximum of $25 total, not including the cost of the kit. There is to be no kit bashing and no scratch built accessorizing. There are also to be no additional engine detailing parts or pieces added. Anything that was included in the kit may be used, then only the listed additional third party parts are allowed.

This is to be new builds only. None of your previously built kits are eligible. All entries must be submitted no later than midnight on March 24, 2018. Voting will begin shortly after and the voting period will be for 15 days.

Upon completing the building of your entry, please post a new thread on this board with a basic description and name of entry. Each entry must include 5, and ONLY 5, photos of the car as follow: One frontal ¾, one rear ¾, one broadside of the driver’s side, one engine, and one chassis. For the engine photo, please be sure and crop the image down to display the engine area only. I will then include the frontal ¾ photo in the voting thread.

There will be a 1st place winner and also a 2nd place winner as voted on by forum members. I have decided to offer a choice of kits from my own stash as prizes. Below are the 6 kits that will be available. The 1st place winner will make his choice from the 6, then the 2nd place winner will choose from the remaining 5 kits.

We ask you all to please keep in mind, this is a friendly contest meant to provide enjoyment for the members of this forum. Please participate with good intentions in mind. This contest is to meant to showcase basic model building skills. Keep the overall, basic description of the contest in mind as you proceed with your project. Thanks, and good luck to all.

Just a note about the contest. We decided we wanted to start out with a contest that nearly every member could participate in if he chooses to do so. a "Basic model building skills contest" is the best way to offer that opportunity. That's the reason for the very limited engine detailing and the restriction on kit bashing and no scratch building. Many of you have been building so long that kit bashing and scratch building are pretty much basic skills for you, but for those just getting into the hobby those are advanced skills. So for this one contest, basic skills only. Maybe some of you real pros would want to take a break from your usual routine and do a simple, basic build.

, that's mentioned in the rules. The primary reason for allowing third party decals is to build a tribute car that was never issued as a kit. We also know that some of the decals in the box aren't the greatest quality.

That's the same, basic reasoning for allowing third party wheels and/or tires.

Seems like I need to clarify the photos for the contest. If you'd like to post photos of your build please post a thread in the "In the race shop - WIPs" board. We'd all like to see photos of your builds as you progress, along with notes or explanation of techniques.

Then, once you build is complete, put up one post with the 5 photos outlined in the rules here in the contest board. Once the build period ends, I will then place one photo of your project along with your username and the name of your build if you gave it a name. Otherwise I'll simply use the year, make, and model to identify your car.

Hope that clears up the confusion on the photos. And , by all means feel free to post multiple photos and comments on a thread of your own in WIPs board. We want to see them.

This is just what I have needed. I have not been to the bench in a long time. I have been trying to build high detail for a long time and I must have burned out. Going back to the basics with a fun build has got me going again.

Quick question, since my build (Swamp Rat) has no heater hoses can I add one short fuel line?

Of course the final decision on this would be up to Steve. As far as the rules are right now it's a basic build or some people would call it out of the box. They have approved plug wires, aftermarket wheels and tires and decals up to a maximum of 25.00. but only the listed items. I'd say that the fuel line would be a no but like I said Steve would have the final say on that one. Cool experience I got to meet him a few times at races in the 80's & 90's just before he retired. If you ever get to Florida make sure you check out his museum. It's really cool !! Good luck with the paint I've always liked that model.

Yeah, I'm afraid I'll have to say no to your request. I do understand where you're coming from with dragsters not having heater hoses, but once an exception is made it almost always results in a flood of requests for other exceptions.

What we're shooting for in this first contest is a showcase for basic building skills. Fuel lines are definitely beyond the scope of basic skills. The fact is that third party distributors and plug wires are beyond basic, out of box, skills but we've allowed that since so many builders nearly always include it.

Hope you understand. No one building an open engine type car will have any advantage over you. In fact the only thing ANY build will have compared to your engine would be heater hoses, if you want to consider that an advantage. I really doubt heater hoses would cause any of us to choose one build over another.

Just joined but I would like to add my 2 cents. How about for the comp - box stock basic build. No add ons. The builder can always add extra goodies to their hearts content after the comp has finished.
