Does anyone here know or remember Steve Cerka from the early 90's. I believe he was from the Chicago area. He built some unbelievable drag cars for 2 or 3 years there and then just disappeared as quickly as he had come on the scene. I was looking thru some old contest annuals and ran across some of his old builds. I didn't really know him just always had admired his work and wondered what happened to him.

70, I met him in Dallas at the Southwest Challenge Contest during that time. Nice guy and humble. He would answer any question you asked. I saw a Mustang and a 64 GTO first hand and the detail would just blow your mind. I would have to dig out all the old mags to remember for sure but one year everyone jokingly called it "Cerka's Circus" and one of the model mags had him on the cover with that title. He blew everyone away. There were some other super modelers from that time, John McGowan, Steve Catron, Russ Schwenkler, Don Fahrni, Fred Grumke, Paul Erhart just to name a few. I am just guessing here but I would gamble he just burned out. Some of those guys were a little younger than me but most of them are well into drawing their Social Security now if they are even still with us. Those were fun times and lots of really good people. I too burned out and didn't build any automotive subjects for 10 years or more. I built WWII Armor and fooled with stick and tissue aircraft a little but I still have PLENTY of car kits to build. I don't care for the contest thing anymore and just build for pleasure. With stiff hands and crappy eyesight it is not as easy as it used to be.

The mustang was the one I was looking at and made me wonder what happened to him. I've looked at those photos for 25 years and I'm still in awe. As far as the age and eyesight thing I totally understand. Believe me !!! Thanks, I wish I had had the chance to meet him.
