Even from the initial release of AMT's Double Dragster kit back in the 60's I have wondered about the inspiration of the side-by-side dragster. Today I came across this dragster of Dode Martin.

Not that there is a specific explanation as to why they did it, but this link is to a kind of pictorial history of early dragsters, or "diggers". There is one photo with comment that mentions it was just another thing the guys tried to gain an advantage. Probably the best explanation there is. georgeklass.net/dragsters.html

That would be a hard one to build.

I'm not really a dragster or Top Fuel fan, but in my short time searching through eBay and other sites I don't recall seeing any kits with such powerplants. Surely at some point back in the 60s somebody produced at least one such kit.

Revell parts packs has the, the AMT parts pack has one, two come in the double dragster kit. the Cosmic Charger has a front blown Hemi and the Orange Crate has a front blown Oldsmobile. There is a few more but I can't name them right now. I have a few I built if you'd like I'll photograph them and post them. A twin Chevy Fiat, Twin Hemi rail, a Stude rail and Bob's AMC 6 powered rail. Paul

"Surely at some point back in the 60s somebody produced at least one such kit." The AMT Double Dragster offers the possibility of building this very dragster, the frame rails are even quite similar.

OK. I just missed your reference to the Double Dragster kit in your original post. And I'll have to admit that I never looked closely at that kit. I just saw the term "Double Dragster" and saw two cars on the box and mentally concluded they were just referring to building two cars. My bad. I should pay more attention to detail.

Inspiration for the 1:1 "duals" was the infamous NHRA fuel ban (about 1957-1963). The Cook and Bedwell fueler went 166+mph causing concern about driver/spectator safety. The duals were an attempt to make up for the lost liquid horse power (nitro). Nitro racers were still around. They just didn`t race at NHRA tracks. I commend AMT for producing that kit. It shouldn`t be that hard to recreate one of those cars with decent pics, decals, and some scratch building......

Double engines means double horsepower. The front drive for the superchargers means no belts and pulleys to contend with, though that didn't stop a lot of them. It also produced less aerodynamic drag, and made better vision for the driver.
