I just posted a reply on another board that brought a question to mind. I've never been one that is too interested in funny cars, dragsters, or altereds. However, after seeing several altereds on the forum my interest has really grown for them.
I've done a bit of eBay searching for altered kits. There seems to be a very limited selection of those kits on eBay so I expanded my searching to several online retail and wholesale kit suppliers. They too have limited choices.
So, where do I find altered kits for sale? Are you guys using just one or two base kits then customizing them to build different 1:1 cars? I'll take any and all comments and suggestions on how to eventually build several different altereds for my collection. Which kit should I start with? Where is the best place to find decal sheets for different cars, either actual 1:1 or fantasy cars? What specific skills do I need to develop to build good looking projects?
In short, what can all you guys recommend that I buy or do to help me out with building altereds? Any & all help will be greatly appreciated, for sure!
One final thing. If anyone has a kit, or kits, for sale feel free to PM me with details. Obviously I'm not going to be interested in any high dollar kits at this point.

AMT Double Dragster has a Fiat Altered. Me I base some on the Bantam Blast/ Wild Willie Bosch kit or use as a basis any of the Model T , model A or 32 to 34 Fork kits as a basis. Some of the gassers like the Willy's Pick up, the V.W gasser from IMC can be an altered with just the elimination of the radiator.

The Double Dragster, Bantam Blast, and Wild Willie are the kits I had seen. So besides doing a lot of customizing and scratch building those 3 are what I have to choose from.
OK. Then what about decals? Is there any one particular vendor that has decal sheets for different cars?

Slixx has a "Fuel Altered" category. The altered class was as open as the Gas class. I have in my pile of started but unfinished kits a '36 Ford coupe altered from the early '60's period. Basically all I will be doing is installing a different engine (setback about 15%), remove all bumpers, headlights, and other exterior nonessential pieces. Altereds could be as wild as you want (Miss Deal Studebaker) to something simple as I am building. Engines varied from full-blown nitro burning engines (AA/FA) to more simple configurations. Some of the earlier AWB cars were later run as altereds. If you can find some of the NHRA/AHRA/IHRA rule books from the 60's-early 70's they will give you many ideas.

OK. I've got all the NHRA rule books from '58 to '68 so I'll do some reading to see what I come up with.

That kind of reading could be enlightening. The Altered cars were pretty radical, especially the blown cars, like the mentioned Wild Willie Bosch, who was noted for having a large steering wheel and driving a AA/FA with one hand. Those cars were essentially a short wheel base dragster with a body, running blown on nitro, and some pretty wild antics.
