I guess since this contest runs through the end of the year I'll throw my hat in the ring. I might actually be able to get this built by then. No, I don't have any expectation of winning the contest. I'm in it for the fun. At the rate I'm going this might turn out to be the first build I complete. I thought I'd be the first to join in and let you all know what I'm planning on building. There is absolutely no reason two guys couldn't build the same car, but I know some guys don't like that idea so I thought I'd let you all know what I decided to build. .

GO FOR IT! looking forward to seeing your progress. I can't imagine 2 cars coming out exactly the same in this wide open a contest!

I agree 100%, Allen. That's why I said there would be no reason 2 guys couldn't build the same exact kit. I only made the announcement of what I intend to build in case any of you guys don't want to build the same thing.

The kit was delivered just a while ago. I just finished going through parts, pieces, and instructions. This is one of those kits that has more detail than the kits I remember as a kid and many more parts. There are lots of parts I'll not use since it can be built stock, custom, or drag, but even then there is much more detail and several more parts than I recall ever having to assemble all those years ago. It seems they like chromed engine parts a little more than I do, so I'll be throwing some stuff in the Purple Pond. Even though this build will eventually be displayed "hood down" for the rest of my life, I think I'll try and detail the engine as best I can. I won't go hog wild like you gurus do, but removing some chrome and adding a wired distributor and plug wires should make a bit of a difference in the engine bay.
I do have a question for you NHRA Classes gurus after looking everything over. If I choose to use the "drag version" interior, does that effect the car negatively for being a legitimate Super Stock class car? I've read those danged rule books until I'm blue in the face and just can't figure all that out. The drag version interior includes different seats, the stock dash with an added gauge cluster console, and a couple other differences.
Speaking of classes, I'm still trying to figure out the weight/horsepower factor for determining class. The first thing I run into is whether this engine is supposed to be a 335 horse, 360 horse, or 400 horse. I've found all three horsepower ratings for the '68 428 Cobra Jet motor. The 335 and 360 horse ratings are supposedly official ratings, while the 400 horse is supposedly what the 335 horse motor actually put out. So I first have to determine what horsepower rating to use before I can find the class factor. Anybody know for sure?

The classes are determined by vehicle weight divided by cubic inches not horse power. 2900 lbs divided by 428 give 6.78 pounds per cubic inch. Class would be SS/B or SS/BA for automatic. It could not run in factory stock class because C.I. to weight minimum was 8.00 lbs per c.i. .

Well, doggies. Where did I manage to get horsepower in my head? I just went back and read the 1968 rule book and sure enough, it specifically says cubes.
Just curious, where did you find the 2900 pound figure for the car? Everything I ran across says somewhere between 3200 and 3450 pounds.
By the way, I'm actually shooting for a mid to later 70s drag car, if that makes a difference in the rules. I'm thinking '76 or '77 probably.

OK now I'm totally confused. We are talking about stock and Super Stock not the modified classes. Why would anybody ever run a 250 hp 327 in stock class if a 365 hp 327 in the same car would run in the same class. Straighten me out somebody please!

Yep, Allen. I'm just as confused as you are. A 340 'Cuda in the same class as a 426 Hemi 'Cuda somehow just doesn't seem fair.

Quote from the 77 rulebook - The interior must have full factory type upholstery, including front and rear seats when so equipped and factory type floor mats in place. No interior gutting is allowed. A full stock dashboard, including instruments, wiring, fresh air ducts, and controls must be retained. Supplementary instruments tach, pressure gages, etc. optional acceptable. I'm pretty sure this includes the factory seats, as every one I ever saw back then had factory seats in it.

Just scratch my last response. The fingers were in gear, but the brain wasn't. Geeez, what was I thinking?

OK, Allen. That's pretty much what I was thinking. I've got to use the stock interior option to keep the car in the Super Stock classes. Thanks.

Ouch. I pity you. I've been fighting the headache problem for 20 years, more or less. I eat Hydrocodone like candy. Not fun. I tell people I don't have headacheS. I have A headache - one. It started 20 years ago and I've still got it. It just varies from day to day as to whether it's just a headache day, a bad headache day, or a literal tear jerking, mind blowing, gut wrenching headache day.
Hope they figure your problem out.

By the way, I'm actually shooting for a mid to later 70s drag car, if that makes a difference in the rules. I'm thinking '76 or '77 probably. I randomly picked 2900 just for an example. 1968 Shelby GT with the 428CJ & 4speed is 3445, add the Drag Pack you are 3570 8.34 lbs per cubic inch. In 1968 you'd be A/MP, SS/D or A/S 1971 Cuda 340 4 speed 3245 lbs 9.52 lbs per cubic inch C/MP, E/S or SS/D 1971 hemi Cuda 4 speed 3520 lbs 8.26 lbs per cubic inch B/MP, B/S or SS/B A 327 / 250 H.P. would not run in the same class as 327 /365 in Stock or Super Stock because one of the factors is factory availability You could get a 275 h.p.in a Nova, Chevelle, Impala or Biscayne but not a 365 Fuelie. Needed a Vette for that, different weight break. You would see a 327 Nova running a 396 Impala because the weight breaks are in the same area. 1967 nova 327 275 h.p. 4 speed 3038lbs 9.29 lbs per cubic inch B/MP, A/S or SS/D 1967 vette L79 327 360h.p. 4 speed 3451bs 10.55 lbs per cubic inch CM/SP, B/MP, B/S or SS/E Only class the Vette and Nova would run head to head is B/MP with the Nova having a 410+lb weigh advantage so ET's would be close, who was quickest on the launch would be the deciding factor.

I'm starting to remember why I liked running ET so well. Bracket racing kind of solves all those class issues.
