I think I've figured out what I want to do for the celebrating the 50 years of 1968 contest. It will be a 1968 Ford Torino GT with a 428 Cobra Jet. I'm not sure whether I want a stick or an automatic. Probably an automatic. Built to run per 1977 NHRA Super Stock rules. Mainly because I have a '77 rulebook that will always be handy. I'm pretty sure it would fit into SS/FA. I'll use the AMT 1969 Ford Cobra back dated to a 1968 GT.

Great choice, Allen. I was only around one of those cars back in the day. A fella I knew pretty well had a green one with the 428. The car was wicked powerful, but he could never get the power to the ground. I raced him a few times with my '67 Barracuda and beat him every time due to his inability to get off the line. He either went up in smoke or dogged it out. Since you happened to mention your '77 rule book, you might be able to answer a question I have that I was just about to post in another thread. I'm going to build that '68 Shelby GT-500 as a drag car. I don't have the kit yet, but it should have the 428 Cobra Jet with a 4 speed tranny in it. I looked it up and depending on which website you want to trust, it should weigh between 3200 and 3400 pounds. I was figuring on building it as a Super Stock entry. The "supposed" horsepower was listed as 335. Based on that engine and the weight, what class would it run? Sorry to kind of hijack your thread. I have the rule books for 1958 through 1968, but I was really leaning more towards the middle to late 70s as the period for the car. Your '77 rule book would be just perfect. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do with the Torino. Your Torino and my Shelby would make a great pair of race cars! Using the rule book from 1968, the Shelby should also be a SS/F car, but I don't know how much change there was between '68 and '77.

I'm using a more modern stock super stock classification guide because I don't have a 77 version - I don't think it has changed much - list the factored NHRA HP at 360 and the torino weight at 3548.So 3548 divided by 360 = 9.85 lb per hp SS/HA The Mustang is listed at 3241# 3241 divided by 360 = 9.00 SS/G or GA Here is the site I'm getting these numbers from www.nhraracer.com/content/general.asp?articleid=46635&zoneid=132If some one here sees where I am missreading this please correct me. Thanks

I'll have to do some reading on that site. I had never run across that one. Thanks!
