OK. This is the third time this has happened to me in the past couple of months. I search eBay using the "Best Offer" option. I've had better luck trying to negotiate prices with a seller than I have with straight bidding.
So earlier today I found one of the type auctions that make me scratch my head. It's an auction, but has a "Best Offer" option. That in itself is a little strange to me. His starting bid price is $14.75 with $10.85 shipping. I try to buy kits for a price WITH SHIPPING that's under 20 bucks. Can't always get that done, but that's my goal.
On this particular kit I figured I'd really only be interested if I could get it for about $18 or less with the shipping. Knowing there would probably be some dickering back and forth with counter offers, I made an offer of $6.50. I know that's way too cheap, but I wanted to start a dialogue with the seller.
I got a "Decline" message. No counter offer, just a decline. It's hard to negotiate when one of the parties refuses to participate. So I sent a message to the seller and asked if he would make a counter offer for me to consider. His reply was basically the same as I had gotten from 2 other sellers. He told me he would only consider an offer quite a bit higher than the $14.75 opening bid price.
Huh? Say, WHAT? Why in He** would I make a "Best Offer" quite a bit higher than the opening bid price? Why wouldn't I just submit that amount as my maximum bid price?
This has happened 3 times now! Am I all screwed up, or isn't a "Best Offer" normally lower than the "Buy It Now" price and also lower than the opening bid price?
So, what is it guys? Am I looking at this all wrong? Or are the sellers all screwed up? What's a "Best Offer" supposed to be?
