What would you use to make a automatic tranny blanket ? Another Question ; What do you guys use to strip paint and chrome with out crazing the plastic ? John I can't remember what I used a long time a go.

To strip paint I will use "Super Clean" it is available in the automotive section at most major retailers (WalMart, etc.). Another one that works well is "Simple Green" (I think is the name). Also brake fluid works really well, especially on laquer, but is not recommended for resin pieces (it turns them into blobs) and some of the newer type plastics have an adverse effect. For removing chrome I use plain old household bleach, of course the other two I mentioned will also work. Some guys use "Easy-Off" oven cleaner, but it is too messy and the fumes are hard to take. I have never made a tranny blanket, but I would think a piece of paper towel or toilet paper soaked in a 50/50 white glue/water mixture wrapped around the transmission, let it dry and paint it would be rather convincing. HTH.

John, Depending on how conformable it needs to be, and how convincing you want the outer surface to appear, you might try either the white adhesive bandaging tape that has a definite "web" type of surface (not super conformable) or plain old gauze. It would have a much more randome pattern in its appearance but would be very conformable to the shape of the trans. It seems to me like the white adhesive tape might come closer to replicating the product I've linked to: www.google.com/products/catalog?q=transmission+blanket&hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7SUNA&prmd=ivns&resnum=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&wrapid=tlif130615816093810&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=7780215575571421194&sa=X&ei=PGXaTfuALMOatwfustToDg&ved=0CH0Q8wIwAA# You could even cut the tape into narrow strips to replicate the web belts shown in the link. I hope this helps. I haven't tried this yet, myself, but probably will at some point in time.

Thanks Guys. I'll try the adhesive tape and see what it looks like and let you know. I've tryed brake fluid and easy-off but didn't like the mess, I'll try the super clean and see how that works. John Scott, that link didn't work, FYI.
