I don't think there was any real accurate color. Some of the bigger teams with money painted the blocks to either match or contrast the bodies they were using. Whereas the low-buck racers most often left the blocks painted factory color or bare metal. IMHO, if it doesn't add to the speed/et then don't waste money on it.

I'm not saying it's right or not but back in those days I would here that painting the engines black would keep them cooler. I don't know why a color of paint would keep something cooler unless it was actually sitting directly in the sun.

Most all were black or what ever the factory colors were. Some were even raw steel/ iron color. But mainly a glossy black engine shows no oil seepage for the track officials to see. Paul
