Morning ladies and gents! I mentioned yesterday when we were looking at the altered kit about a Wild Willie story that I had. I grew up in a very small town in eastern NC. Your typical little southern boy that had never been anywhere or done much of anything. Don't get me wrong I think now that it was a great way to grow up. But I was a very "bless his soul" kid. I had been a car and drag racing fan from the time I could first hold a hot rod magazine. I got to go to the local "outlaw" dragstrip with my older brother occasionally. but it was 60 miles away so we didn't go very often.
Anyhow I had just graduated from high school and got a job at the local cotton mill, so I finally had a couple of dollars in my pocket and a little freedom and I read that IHRA was running a national event in Rockingham, NC. So here I go I'm off to Rockingham, it's Friday night just before they are shutting down for the night. I walk over to one of the back gates and there's no one there.I figure I'll walk in and look around. I stepped thru the gate and looked to my left and there he was. One of my all time heroes WILD WILLIE BORSH !!
He had the charger funny car by this time and the body and chassis were sitting off to the side and he was sitting there on a tarp, under a small canopy, working on the block with hemi parts everywhere, all around him. I had died and gone to heaven!! I think he spoke to me I'm really not sure. but that doesn't matter I was in his presence!! I had died and gone to heaven!! That was my first experience at big time drag racing and I'll never forget it. Enjoy your day!
