OK. I have asked this question before on a couple other forums. I don't think I have been asking my question the right way because I keep getting answers that aren't necessarily what I'm looking for. I plan to build lots of gassers as I go along in the hobby. I also know that I would like to build gassers out of kits that aren't meant to be gassers. I have actually started a list of kits I'll want to purchase in the future for my gasser projects.
My question pertains to adding a dropped straight axle to the car. Before anybody starts to offer suggestions, please follow along here. My builds will all be displayed in individual display cases with hoods down and doors closed. I intend to use twist ties like on bread wrappers to tie the front and rear of the car to the display case bottom. So no one will be inspecting the bottom of the car. I will never enter any of my builds in a show or contest, so I'm actually building for myself. What I'm looking for is a very inexpensive, and relatively easy way to put a dropped axle on my builds. While no one will ever actually see the bottom of the car, I'm not exactly looking for a toothpick and bubble gum method, but I also don't have a need for every nut and bolt that would be found on a 1:1 car. I have found a few sellers on eBay offering a straight axle and two leaf springs for around ten bucks plus shipping. I think that's a little high for my needs.
So, here it is. Can anybody provide me a way to install a dropped axle setup on my builds? Or are the axle/leaf spring offerings on eBay the best way to go? The one thing that so many guys always offer is to find some other kit that has the parts I need. I'm hoping I never get into that particular habit. You would always have boxes of kits sitting on shelves that have been scavenged. So for my needs, I'm thinking I need a way that would NOT be taking parts from another kit nor buying those parts on eBay.
Any specific ideas?
