I got my new spray booth the other day. Set it up and have gotten the chance to use it for some small parts in the last couple of days. Overall I really like it. It's a little bit smaller than my old homemade one but it's so much more open that it feels as big, if not bigger . Let's keep in mind that we are looking at a $100.00 item in a 3 to 400 dollar product range so obviously this is not going to be the Cadillac.
It is built to fold up and be portable. I never intend to use it this way. It is set up in my model room and probably will spend it's entire life there. In opening it up to use, the folding parts were a little bit flimsy so I used some Duck tape to solidify things a little and seal some cracks in the design. If you want yours to be easily portable you might want to skip this step. It's completely usable as designed just not very sturdy. The one omission in mine is there were no instructions for set up. I wouldn't have used them anyway but it would have been nice to have if I had never seen one before.
Setting up the vent in the window was pretty run of the mill. The vent is actually pretty heavy duty. The part that goes in the window is about 1” tall x about 12” wide which makes it convenient to use solid foam insulation to seal off the rest of the window opening. Here again I used tape to seal all the connections. Probably overkill but I didn't want a lot of leaks.
I like the lighting system a lot, much brighter than my old homemade system. With decent eyes this would be very useable. I may still need to add a little for my old eyes.
I've had the chance to paint most of the pro mod engine parts the last couple of days. I air brushed these with out incident. The fan seems to be plenty strong to handle this over spray with no fumes escaping into the room. I used the booth to mix the paint and clean up with lacquer thinner with little to no smell.
I ran a test with a Testors spray can to see how well it would handle the overspray from it . It worked fine no over spray escaped although I did get a little of the fumes from that but it seemed to pull them out very quickly. I'll still use a mask when spraying 2 part clears just for safety's sake.
I have really enjoyed using my new system so far. If there is a problem with it, it is the fan is a little bit noisy. I mean it's a fan. It reminds me of a small window air conditioner maybe not quite that loud. But when sitting right over it to paint it is a little bit annoying. To save 2 or 300 dollars I can close the model room door and live with it.
For the price Highly Recommended!
