I was doing a little organizing in my man cave a couple days ago and ran across the AMT '71 Charger R/T kit I have. Note that it is the R/T kit and NOT the Street Machine kit. I looked it over for a few short minutes and suddenly got the idea that I might make it my first build. Not that I'm going to intentionally botch the build, but it's not a gasser and not one of my early 60s cars. Another thing that caught my eye is that it's a 440 car and not a Hemi. Since I'm going to be building a LOT of Hemis down the road, maybe this non-Hemi car is a good place to start.
I started doing research on the 'Net for any and all info on a '71 Charger R/T I could find. I have literally thousands of saved web pages, paint codes, and photos of cars that I have in my stash to build. Any time I feel like spending on my laptop instead of watching mindless dribble on the tube I usually pick a car off my inventory list and start doing research for the build down the road.
I wanted to find and save photos of different colored Chargers so I could make a decision on how to paint my build. Finding photos of these cars is not a problem. The 'Net is full of them. After a couple minutes I noticed something that I'm totally lost on. It seems there are a few variations on the front end of the '71 Charger R/T. There are actually 4 different "nose" variations. I'm really confused on this. The nose can be either painted or chromed. Then the headlights can be either hide-away or 4 fixed lenses. At least that's what I'm seeing in all the photos. So for all you MOPAR gurus, what's the deal with this? Is it just different trim levels or could the '71 Charger R/T be ordered in any fashion the dealer or buyer chose?
I think my preference is more towards the 4 open, fixed lens lighting with a painted nose. I haven't opened the kit to check, but the box art shows a chrome nose. I'm guessing I'll have to strip the chrome from the nose in the kit then paint it.
There is another exterior trim option that seems to differ from car to car. Some R/Ts have a rear deck spoiler and some do not. Was that another option left up to the buyer or dealer ordering the car?
