I had been trying to watch the amount of photos (files) that have been posted using the forum's free file storage. We're closing in on having used up a fourth of the 200MB free limit. If we reach the limit there are two choices. One is to pay for additional file storage here on the Proboards forum. The second is to have all photos posted on hosting sites outside Proboards. There are a few free photo hosting sites and a few good paid sites. I use Fotki myself. It costs $24 a year for 100GB of storage. That's a pretty good sized storage hole!
While there is no emergency, we will need to make a decision at some point as to what we choose to do as a group. I'm going to leave this thread open to discussion for a while. Then once the group decides what the best thing for us to do is, we can make an informed and rational decision.

I don't feel we have to show every model we've ever built on here. Just the ones we are currently working on.

One additional thing that came to mind after I put the first post up. If it is decided to purchase additional storage from Proboards, that will be a monthly fee that will need to be paid every month, forever. Once we would exceed the 200MB of free storage, any and all photo posted would "disappear" if we ever stopped paying the monthly fee. The forum would then look a lot like what PhotoBucket did to so many sites. Just something to consider.

I'm not seeing any thoughts or ideas being posted guys. If nothing is discussed I'll make the decision myself. I have no problem doing that, but if that's what happens I really hope I won't hear any complaints later on. I took the forum on to create another place for you guys to post photos and discuss the hobby, especially drag racing models, so it's really more your forum than mine. Let's hear what you're thinking about this situation.

I use Fotki also so I don't think mine will affect this if I'm understanding correctly, but even so I would be happy to support whatever decision that is made in the best interest of the group in general.

I also use Fotki ,I do keep copies of my photos on a zip drive. Never cared for Forum photo hosting to much dependent on the forum surviving a long long time.

I used Fotki and PhotoBucket, but quit them both when the started charging. And my folder structure and content got screwed up multiple times on Photobucket (lost pictures), so I'm not interested in a repeat.
I like the easy of posting photos to forums using the Tapatalk app on my phone.
I'm not really interested in creating more accounts to post pictures.
An answer could be to purge old stuff from time to time to keep things "fresh."

I don't know anything about this Tapatalk thing or whatever it is. Can you not use it to post photos hosted on other sites like Fotki?

I am using IMGUR as a posting site, a bit confusing to learn but it is free. One suggestion I have is to limit the number of photos of any given model, say maybe no more than four. I am not pointing fingers, but I do visit other sites that someone will post a build with 10 or more photos. I do not need to see a picture of every 15% around and over a build. A couple of good exterior shots, an interior, and an engine bay shot should be sufficient to let us know what someone has done. Just my $.02.

I use Imgur to host all my photos, so I don't think I'm affecting you storage issues.

Putting a "limit" on the number of photos allowed is kind of hard to do. For the guys that use outside photo hosting there is no real reason for a limit. The number of photos in a thread isn't what the problem is. The storage limit is only on photos that have been directly uploaded to the forum and that the forum is hosting. So if a "limit" were imposed it would only be directed at guys who upload to the forum. That's penalizing only a small portion of members. I can't really justify doing that. On top of that, a lot of guys really enjoy seeing lots of photos of a build - from square one all the way to completion. In a lot of ways, a forum with lots of photos is more interesting to new members which is what a forum should be about.
I won't say I would never impose a limit, but I'm hoping for a better solution.

About Tapatalk. Maybe I didn't make myself clear. I have a habit of that. What I meant was, can you post a photo that is hosted on Fotki into a thread you put up on a forum?

Nope, coyote, there is no problem being caused by anybody using any third party hosting site. Whether it's a free or paid site, as long as it's not a direct upload to the forum it's not a problem.
And for that matter, uploading directly to the forum isn't really a problem, as long as somebody is going to pay for the increased storage fee charged by Proboards.
