OK lets try out this new Drawing Board thing. I've been thinking the last few days about what I wanted to build for the Carolina Kustom modelers NNL show in August of this year. The theme is first responders which is something I really don't have any interest in building, nothing against those that do but it's just not my thing. The subtheme is 65 years of the Corvette. Now that's something I can do something with! It just so happens a new member (styrenesurfer) posted a photo of a very interesting corvette altered just last night. I am currently trying to get in touch with him to make sure he doesn't mind me using his photo but barring that I think this would make a very cool entry under this sub theme. I probably will use the photo for inspiration more than tryng to build a replica of the car in the photo. I have a Revell 58 and a couple of 62's but to be honest they are too nice of a kit to use for this project. I have an old monogram 60 with the multi piece body that would be perfect for this especially since I don't know that I would ever build it otherwise. The biggest problem with the body is going to be how to thin it down enough to look realistic. Any ideas? On the chassis the 1st thing I thought about were 32 rails but this is an altered and would probably have a round tube chassis. So then I thought about the altered chassis in the amt double dragster kit. I think I will use that general design but I'll try my hand at scratch building it out of brass. I like the suicide straight axle and even the front wheels. I like the blown and injected small block Chevy. I'll keep that. I'm thinking either light gray primer or maybe a suede color of some sort. That's about as far as I've gotten with the plans for this one. So, help me out here guys, throw your ideas at me and let's see what sticks. Thanks!

that is wild! I never heard of anything like that. I guarantee that would be something different.one question if you remember the ladder I guess is for some kind of contest but was the far end just dragging on the ground or was it on casters or maybe a platform? I googled this and see that it is mainly NY thing. but not a lot of info it talks mainly about the different teams that competed Thanks Cool Idea

That IS wild. Is that still going on? Hard to believe with all the do-gooder safety organizations that have come to be that this could still be going on.

Still going on, trucks are faster now with the GM, Mopar crate engines. Seems to be a N.Y. thing , mostly on Long Island. Every department has a B and C race rig to run. $50,000 to $75,000 budget for the trucks. When the engine rules changed in 1980 limiting cubic inches to 400, I was buying 392's 440's , 426 Max Wedges and Hemis for 3 to 500 a piece. At one point I had over 30 of those in my shop stacked. Atlantic Steamers had a crash in 1960. My uncle was the builder/ driver. Lost the brakes and hit 11 people in the crowd. Went from Snow Fence barriers to steel and hay bales.

Allen...
It is such a cool old altered I just couldn't resist posting it here just for inspiration.
Many of my favorite oddball drag cars ran weird bodies that are just not available
in modle kits or even resin. This one because its an '58 Corvette should be doable.
I wish I had more info on that car depicted, just an old snapshot posted online.

The ladder has casters on one end and when the crew leaves the truck at about 20mph the ladder flips up 180 degrees with the spikes on the front end. The trucks accelerate to 70+ in around 400 feet. That is so cool man, I've definitely got this on my short list. Thanks

OK so we probably have a B/C roadster (slightly heavy and sbc assuming 283/301 or so) with a model a chassis and at least partial front suspension. The straight tube axle and radius rods are obviously aftermarket. In order that I research this correctly I am guessing that we are talking very early 60's 62 or 3 at the latest? Thanks for all your help, I'm a little light on my knowledge of the open competition classes from the early years.

Split window bug is about 52 or 53, push car is a 1958 Ford White Wall slicks ended about 1958 or 59 so yeah 1959 to 1961. Guy on the left rear of the Vette with the Goober hat and penny loafers makes it around those years too. The Slingster kit will give you a very close axle, spring and Hairpin radius rods along with the correct blown small block Chevy, only thing to up date on the Slingster SBC is to a later 3 pulley drive. The kit also gives you the period hand brake set up,steering wheel, seat, early chute, spoke front wheels and correct tires, slicks. Chassis either modified Model A or make your own from EverGreen solid square rod.

There is more going on in that photo than I originally payed attention to. Looks like I came to the right forum for all things drag related.

Alright I think this one definitely has to be built and I see one of the big block Corvette fire dept tournament trucks on the project list also since that would combine the theme and subtheme (first responders and 65 years of the corvette) I'm leaning toward the one in the 1st photo or one that looks a lot like that one I'm glad this show isn't until late August. Thanks again
