More great info, Paul. I never knew there was such a thing as a ball joint spacer. I just keep learning. I think I've learned more about automobiles on modeling sites than I ever did reading manuals and magazines for 1:1 cars. All you guys lending your skill and expertise are muchly appreciated too.

Well, all the talk and photos are making me think I need to do my second-ever gasser.

Go for it! Gassers are definitely one of my favorites. I'm not sure how many specific gasser kits I have now but it's safe to say well over 20. Then I have another 8 - 10 kits that I intend to build as gassers even though the kit doesn't include a gasser option.
I think I developed the interest in gassers because they were the real "Wild Child" cars running at the strips I was at back in the day. I was at mostly smaller, local type drag strips so no dragsters and very few altereds were present, but there was never a shortage of gassers.

I appreciate the additional photos and that will be a good option for me in the future. Fabricating A-arms and front suspensions for the circle track cars I build are something I have done a lot of so this makes sense to me and might be easier for me than the straight axle I just finished doing. Thanks again!

Not all gassers had straight axles, a majority of C/gas and lower and later /MP cars had ball joint spacers, spring spacers or the Ball joint spacers and what was called springs and a half coils. My Chevy didn't get a straight axle until the last rebuild in 2003. from 1962 until 2003 it ran springs and a halfwith ball joint spacers. All were NHRA, AHRA, UDRA and IHRA approved for use. Paul
nice. I kind of knew that, good info. you have a great background don't you?

ok, got some questions. if joe average gasser dude was building a 66 nova gasser in his garage, you know, after all the bills are paid, I have this much to spend on the race car. say he was getting a little help from the local speed shop he frequents and his buddys were passing him some parts.... here are my questions... or better yet... how would you guys like to see it... - he gets a set of fiberglass fenders and a hood from his buddy. the car is a average looking yellow, should the fenders be flat black, a different color altogether, or would he have enough money to have them painted. - the speed shop cave him a deal on an hilborn injection setup that he is still paying on, is he running a mag or a aftermarket distributor? - is he running mags up front, or the basic steelies all the way around? - a racing seat or one stock bucket seat with seat belts? - any cage at all? - he has eliminated the radiator. or should he keep it? - has he located the battery in the trunk? - , he is running 8" slicks. is he getting the car up enough that the slicks sit below the wheel well or inside the wheel well. I am also trying to make the door panels look like the interior panels have been taken off. thanks in advance.

Hilborn with auto short stacks, stick long stacks. Auto requires containment blanket, sticks require scatter shield. both require drive shaft loop. Traction bars are considered a safety feature by the NHRA and AHRA I'd go hot distributor with a MSD AL6. Mags have points and are a P.I.A. Personal preference on wheels but I'd run narrow mags up front. Narrower tire width = less resistance = better time and speed. Racing seat. Safety , with minimum of 4 point harness. Cage. Car breaks 10's need one, border line on chute. Also adds stiffness to unit body with a cage. No radiator puts it in the Altered Class. Battery in right rear corner with shut off to out side car. Fuel cell required with roll over anti spill valve. Slicks with mini tubs to only "square off" the inner wheel well housing. Tire clearance I'd radius the wheel openings. Gassers require upholstered seats and door panels. 10% engine set back, car can't be raised so the bottom of the body rocker is higher than the center of the wheels.

I knew I could count on you Paul, I really appreciate taking the time out to answer my questions. now I am going to ask a few more.
if this car was running, say in the late 70's would all these rules apply?
Paint in my book would be a luxury, my 55 been in various colors of primer since 1976. - agreed, I am going to run flat black hood and fenders.
Hilborn with auto short stacks, stick long stacks. - this one I knew... yea for me....
Auto requires containment blanket, sticks require scatter shield. both require drive shaft loop. Traction bars are considered a safety feature by the NHRA and AHRA - cool. I am running a 4-speed, better start scratch building. how about ladder bars (like the ones in the rat packer)
I'd go hot distributor with a MSD AL6. Mags have points and are a P.I.A. - check, I am running a distributor,
Personal preference on wheels but I'd run narrow mags up front. Narrower tire width = less resistance = better time and speed. - I really am torn on this one, every time I think all steelies, I like the mags.... and visa-versa. I do have a set of spindle mount mags fron Sharp.
Racing seat. Safety , with minimum of 4 point harness. - yea, I know, but the factory seat looks so cool in there.....
Cage. Car breaks 10's need one, border line on chute. Also adds stiffness to unit body with a cage. - oh yea, this is going to be a low 6 second gasser..... HA... I am gonna go with a 4-point.
No radiator puts it in the Altered Class. - radiator it is.
Battery in right rear corner with shut off to out side car. Fuel cell required with roll over anti spill valve. - check. did they run fuel cells in the late 60's, early 70's (gonna have to dig my SSDI magazines out.)
Slicks with mini tubs to only "square off" the inner wheel well housing. Tire clearance I'd radius the wheel openings. - don't hate me, but o am leaving the stock tubbs in, didn't want to radius the wheel openings, but I guess its the way to go.
Gassers require upholstered seats and door panels. - DARN!! should I keep the stock dash or change it out for a gutted style dash.
10% engine set back, car can't be raised so the bottom of the body rocker is higher than the center of the wheels. - knew about the set back, did not know about the height of the car.
this has been a great help and again, thanks for your time. I would love to sit around a bonfire, have a few beers and listen to some stories, man, I bet you have them.... [/em]

All would apply BUT the Automatic trans blanket.
Seat could be regular stock bucket or fiberglass but it wouldn't have been a "racing" seat. Four point harness but not a roll cage , a roll bar with cross brace with harness attachment point and a pair of bars going to rear chassis (same as Landy's Dodge Charger roll bar). Chute optional.
Run a Moon style tank in the front in or below the grill, no Fuel cell required until 80's
Dash use stock unit with gauge panel and gauges of your choice. Interior "upholstery" is legal .035 aluminum sheet with roller applied bed liner. . .looks like cheap vinyl. Rear seat is optional
Try the 8 inch slicks in the stock body, you can probably carefully thin the body a bit, although the AMT 8 inch slicks fit in the stock body on the Jenkins 66 Nova.
Got some good memories but it was a long time ago when I went for semi professional. Best time ever was 6.84 201.31 mph in 1973 in our Marino's Italian Ice's sponsored alcohol funnycar. Scariest was a $10,000 street race in 1972 on Connecting Highway in NYC running my S/SC Challanger against a Cuda. I only won because I got 2 car length hole shot on him and he blew his rear about 50 feet out from anger for my hole shot.
